Our Story

How We Ended Up Building Decks

We build, repair, and refinish decks for homeowners across the Memphis area, working on everything from a simple platform off the kitchen door to a multi-level deck built around a pool. Most of what we know about decks came from years of general framing work, where you learn fast what holds up and what comes apart after a couple of Tennessee summers.

If you're reading this, your deck's probably got a soft board near the stairs, a railing that shifts when you grab it, or boards gone gray and splintery underfoot. Rot usually starts where the ledger board meets the house or where a joist sits in standing water, and by the time you can see it from the top it's been going on a while underneath. We pull up the decking to check the frame before we quote a fix, and we replace what's actually bad instead of capping new boards over old rot.

Why Choose Us

What you get when you hire us

None of this is complicated. It is mostly just doing what we said we would do.

Licensed & Insured

We carry insurance so you're not on the hook if a worker gets hurt on your property. Ask for our certificate before we start and we'll send it over.

Permits & Code

Railing height, baluster spacing, footing depth, we build to what the local inspector is going to measure. Skipping the permit might save a week now and cost you when you go to sell the house.

Clean Jobsite

Deck demolition leaves scrap wood and stray fasteners scattered in the yard. We bag it, haul it, and do a final magnet sweep for nails before we call a job finished.

Written Quotes

The quote lists the decking brand, the fastener type, and the footing spec, so you know what you're paying for before we start. No changing the scope once the truck shows up.

Realistic Scheduling

Concrete footings need dry ground to cure right, so rain moves deck schedules more than most trades. We'd rather tell you upfront than let you find out on the day.

Material Options

Composite costs more up front and skips the yearly stain, pressure-treated pine costs less and needs upkeep. We'll walk you through the tradeoff instead of just selling whatever's in stock.

Common Questions

Things people ask us

Questions about how we work and who we are.

How long has this company been building decks?
Experience in deck building comes from years of general carpentry and framing work before specializing, which teaches what actually holds up under Tennessee weather versus what just looks fine on installation day. What matters more than years in business is whether the footings, flashing, and fastener choices meet current code, which any homeowner can ask to see.
Do you use your own crew or subcontractors?
Deck work is typically done with an in-house crew rather than subcontracted out, since the framing, decking, and railing all depend on each other and go faster with the same crew from footing to finish. Homeowners should ask directly, since some companies that advertise deck building actually subcontract the work to whoever's available that week.
Can I see photos of decks you've actually built?
Photos of completed deck projects, including the framing stage before the decking goes down, are worth asking for directly, since framing photos show footing depth, joist spacing, and flashing details that finished photos hide. A contractor proud of the work underneath the boards will usually have those pictures ready to send.
Why hire a smaller deck builder instead of a large remodeling company?
A smaller, specialized deck builder usually has the same crew on-site for the whole job rather than rotating in whoever's free, which tends to mean fewer handoff mistakes between the framing stage and the finish work. It can also mean more direct communication, since the person answering the phone is often the same person swinging the hammer.
Where is this company based?
This deck building company is based in Memphis, Tennessee, and works throughout the surrounding suburbs within roughly a 50-mile radius. Confirming service to a specific address is a quick phone call before scheduling an estimate.
How far out is scheduling typically booked?
Deck builders in the Memphis area tend to book several weeks out in spring and early summer, the busiest season, with more open availability in fall and winter. Getting on the schedule early, even before final design decisions are locked in, usually secures a better start date.
Who cleans up the yard after the deck is finished?
Cleanup after a deck build should include hauling off scrap lumber, sweeping up sawdust, and a final sweep for loose screws and nails, since those are what end up in a lawnmower tire or a bare foot later. This should be included in the quoted price, not billed as an add-on at the end.
What happens if something on the property gets damaged during construction?
A licensed and insured deck contractor carries general liability coverage that handles accidental damage to fencing, siding, or landscaping during construction. Homeowners should confirm current insurance coverage and ask for a certificate before work begins, not after something happens.
Will you finish a deck that another contractor started or abandoned?
Taking over a partially built deck is common, though it starts with an inspection of what's already framed, since footing depth and joist spacing from a different crew don't always meet code or work with the planned decking material. Some unfinished framing has to come out and get redone before work can safely continue.
How can a homeowner tell if deck work is being done correctly?
Footings should sit below the local frost depth on concrete that's fully cured before any weight goes on the posts, and ledger boards should be flashed and lag-bolted, not just nailed, into the house's rim joist. A homeowner can ask to see these steps directly, or ask for photos, since they get covered up once the decking goes down.
